Multi today announced that they have successfully handed over the car park deck they have built at Avon Street Car Park to Bath & North East Somerset Council.
The new car park deck was built above the surface area of the existing surface car park at Avon Street to create parking spaces to replace those lost as a result of building the temporary bus station. Building a temporary bus station at Avon Street will allow SouthGate to be fully open one year ahead of schedule by the end of 2010.
Vic Michel, Multi's Technical Director commented on the hand over: "Today's hand over success is an early indication of our commitment to deliver SouthGate within the time frame we have set. The car park is fully functional and the Council is pleased with the swift nature of delivery as well as the standard of the works. Progress is continuing apace elsewhere on-site. Hoardings have now been installed around the old Southgate Centre to allow for its demolition next week."
The existing bus station at Manvers Street will be relocated to Avon Street from June 2007 until the work on the new bus station is finished. Over £13 million is being invested in Bath's new bus station and when complete in 2009 will provide brand new bus facilities, with enhanced disabled facilities and improvements to the surrounding public realm.
