Making a splash with nature this summer

This summer, SouthGate Bath is excited to unveil a striking new installation inspired by the Bath River Line – a 10km linear park following the River Avon through the heart of Bath that enhances biodiversity and climate resilience whilst providing a safe, social and inclusive space for residents and visitors.

From June until September, visitors will be immersed in a vibrant river of ribbons, stories and creativity – transforming our centre into a celebration of water, wildlife and imagination.

At the hear of the installation is a stunning canopy of blue and green ribbons, rippling overhead to create the illusion of a flowing river. Woven into the canopy are willow structures, handcrafted by local artist Julie Starks and pupils from Roundhill Primary, St Martins Garden Primary, and St Michael’s Junior School – giving young voices a presence in the city’s shared spaces.

The experience continues at ground level, with an illustrated ‘river trail’ by artist Marian Hill, guiding visitors through fascinating facts about local wildlife on the river. Interactive QR codes add an extra splash of discovery for curious minds of all ages!

You’ll also spot our giant ‘recycling fish’ – a playful but powerful reminder to recycle your plastic bottles and protect our waterways. And thanks to a partnership with Bath College, even the materials used in the canopy will be repurposed after the season, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
