SouthGate Bath Wins Green Apple Award

SouthGate Bath has been awarded a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice for their project to transform waste management.

The project involved a comprehensive refurbishment of the loading bay area and implementation of efficient waste segregation systems. The floors were painted with eco-friendly coatings to create a cleaner and more pleasant working environment, compactors and electricity supplies were relocated to ensure seamless operations and minimise energy consumption. And finally, improved lighting fixtures were installed, enhancing safety, and reducing electricity usage.

SouthGate Bath is now achieving an average waste recovery rate of 71%, an increase of nearly 40%. The project has also helped in establishing stronger relationships with the tenants, having helped them better understand sustainability objectives and the journey to reach them.

Meet your Centre Manager

Hi, I’m Guy Henderson, Centre Manager at SouthGate Bath.

During my time here, I’ve witnessed SouthGate become the lifestyle destination it is today. Popular with shoppers, families and restaurant goers, the centre is a showcase for British Land’s approach to place making. It’s a place people prefer, no matter what they enjoy doing – a place with customers and community at its heart.

I believe that we have with the right formulation of customer service, retailer mix and local engagement which drives our continued success. Working alongside inspiring retailers and colleagues, we all play a critical role in how this formula is delivered. I’m proud to be a part of the SouthGate, Bath family!

Three Ways School Sensory Garden

Southgate’s operations, facilities, and maintenance team members have donated their time and expertise in designing, engineering and installing the components of this very special sensory garden for Three Ways School in Bath. They worked tirelessly on top of their day jobs to create this magical place for children to unwind, relax and explore.

The project took 2-3 months, from initial concepts and designs to final installation.

Veryan Cranston teacher at Three Ways School said: –

‘’I love it!!! Feels like Christmas for me. Not sure I can come close to explaining what a difference it will make, but for a start, this space will make a huge difference to what we can offer to the children, to how we can engage their often fleeting interest and stimulate their communication. It also provides an amazing resource to help the children regulate their emotions and to learn to play together. Add on to that the fact that you have created a whole new space for me to teach in, and the way this will enthuse my amazingly hard-working team and reinvigorate them and you may begin to get an idea! Thank you so much to all of your amazing team.’’

SouthGate is green

While customers enjoy our shops and restaurants, there is a key focus on sustainability. Our aim is to operate safely and more efficiently – using the energy we have wisely, producing less waste, and, most importantly, to engage with the community and the surrounding landscape in a progressive and encouraging way.

SouthGate’s team has made sustainability a priority. Our objectives involve direct engagement with staff, local resources and visitors. Our water management is particularly forward thinking – we have introduced the Rain Harvesting System, which collects rain water and uses it to flush the public and staff toilets.

Furthermore, our engagement with the community and the surrounding landscape made it a priority for SouthGate to avoid landfill, and so, we teamed up with Veolia – a company that is dedicated to zero landfill. In so doing, we’re working to achieve our goal of being less wasteful and more environmentally sustainable.

Our service pledge

At SouthGate our service pledge aims to connect with each visitor in order to make people ‘smile’.

Here’s how…

S – Showing awareness of all our visitors and tailoring our responses to meet/exceed their individual requirements.

M – Maintaining health and safety across the entire site, so we constantly reassess risk to maintain a safe and presentable environment for all our shoppers and staff.

I – Informing our customers of key events or promotions that add value to their visit, along with a wealth of public information that improves their experience.

L – Listening to all our visitors; asking them for feedback on how we’re doing and, from this, we commit to delivering a high standard of customer service.

E – Experience: we’ll ensure you receive a positive experience at SouthGate from start to finish.

WorldHost Award

Bath is an historic city with a World Heritage status. It is one of the top five tourist locations outside of London, attracting 4.65 million tourists a year. SouthGate is locally dominant, with a large catchment of 1.8 million people including more than 20,000 university students. To support this, we invest time, care and trust in our staff, ensuring that we assist them in providing our customers with the best possible service. We have invested in WorldHost Customer Service Training which resulted in a Bronze WorldHost award.

We aim to keep maintaining excellent standards so that our visitors continue to flock to SouthGate as a steadfast part of the local landscape and a main tourist attraction in Bath.

Employee of the month

The Employee of the Month Award allows us to recognize the individual contributions our team members make. At the end of each month, management make time to discuss which employees have especially stood out – this can be anything from an overall positive attitude to an achievement of something out of the ordinary.

Once we have narrowed the list down to three, we ask the other team members to vote for who they believe deserves the award. This promotes team encouragement, and creates a fair work environment in which all members feel essential to the site and important within the system.

We pride ourselves in working as a team and going the extra mile. In April, for example, we were recognised in the contractor’s monthly newsletter. The car park flooded and the entire SouthGate team pulled together to minimise damage and maximum recovery time. Many hands make light work – with steps like these we hope to continue to encourage positivity and creativity within our team.
